9/2/69 issue.
9/4/69 issue. Yes, I have a sick fascination with groupies, which actually predates the publication of Miss Pamela's first memoir...lengthy descriptions of their function in Dave Marsh's early '80s Who biography Before I Get Old (the first "serious" rock book I ever read) set my prurient pre-teen mind a-reelin'. You can read more about the album in the 5/23/69 "Scenes" column, or download the entire contents (and some other choice groupie-themed mp3s) from here. Worth a listen, especially the first side, in which a number of NYC clubs are mentioned.
9/18/69 issue.
10/9/69 issue.
10/16/69 issue--Boogie-rock in the Bronx.
10/16/69 issue--The Who at the Westchester County Center, White Plains.
10/23/69 issue. Alas, these were the only two Fantasy East ads I found.
10/23/69 issue.
11/13/69 issue. This is the sole Apollo Theater ad I've found in the Voice so far.
11/13/69 issue. Had to look this one up in my trusty copy of Marshall Crenshaw's Hollywood Rock: "Hodgepodge of documentary footage of Twiggy, hippies, and cremations. Includes an interview with Mick Jagger and promo films from the likes of the Stones and the Small Faces. Also seen are Jimi Hendrix, the Bee Gees, and Vanilla Fudge."
11/13/69 issue. [If you enjoy bios on rock writers, Robert Milliken's Lillian Roxon: Mother of Rock is well worth your time.]
11/13, 11/20, and 11/27/69 issues.
11/27/69 issue.
11/27/69 issue. Is this Donovan? I'm not quite sure.
11/27/69 issue.
11/27/69 issue.
12/4/69 issue.
12/4/69 issue: Another wacky event at the Hotel Diplomat.
12/11/69 issue: Aunt Rhoda's Day Camp, 157 East 22nd Street.
12/11/69 issue. Not remotely rock & roll at all, but it cracked me the hell up.
12/11/69, and most late '69 issues. Did people really want to go dancing in an office building?
12/11/69 issue: "Paul Lives" film festival.
12/11/69 issue.
12/25/69 issue.
12/25/69 issue.
12/25/69 issue. Another place whose name frequently comes up in my travels, but this was the only ad I saw.
Well, that about wraps up '69--though I'm in love with so many other non-rock ads that if I don't hold myself back I could go on forever. 1970 is up next, but I might crank out one or two essay-type posts before then.

Have you ever seen the documentary, Groupies, from 1970? http://www.amazon.com/Groupies-Movie-Joe-Cocker/dp/B000EWBO5Y
The whole thing seems to be available on DailyMotion: http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xabpj2_groupies-1970-part-19_music
Oh yeah, ages ago, but it sure would be fun to watch it again. I know it has some footage of Spooky Tooth at the Scene. There were supposed to be other bands in it too, according to the 7/10/69 "Scenes" column, but I guess they eventually opted out! I've got the Cynthia Plaster Caster DVD as well, that's how nutty I am!
