1970 Ads: Other Venues and Miscellany, Part 1

Before I get to the ads, I've just gotta gush just a little about getting to see a screening of Mother of Rock at TIFF last night (don't pay much mind to that ChartAttack reviewer though, the world needs as many docs about '60s and '70s NYC as can possibly be made!). Not only was the film itself fab, but it was accompanied by a delightful Q&A session with the filmmakers and Leee Black Childers. O.K., maybe it all wasn't exactly back-room-at-Max's thrilling, but my posse of rock & roll film freaks and I still had a real cool time.

On to selected rock & roll-related ads from the Voice, January through April 1970.

1/1/70 issue.

1/22/70 issue. Don't worry, they didn't seem to publish an Upper East Side club guide after this.

1/29/70 issue.

1/29/70 issue. I can't possibly copy every album ad, but certain ones speak to me.

2/12/70 issue.

2/12/70 issue.

2/19/70 issue.

2/26/70 issue. Clearly they were going for Electric Circus-style suggestiveness.

3/5/70 issue.

3/5/70 issue. Last sexy one for this joint, I promise.

3/19/70 issue.

3/19/70 issue. I really haven't delved into the classified sections at all, but I guess there wasn't any "musicians wanted" section at this time. These kinds of ads were typically worded like this and sprinkled sparingly through the main body of the paper.

3/19/70 issue.

3/26/70 issue.

3/26/70 issue. The Village Gate adopted a "less jazz, more rock" booking policy around this time, so I collected quite a few of their ads.

4/2/70 issue.

4/16/70 issue.

4/16/70 issue.

4/23/70 issue. I wouldn't be surprised if this place was owned by the same folks who brought us UNLTD.

4/23/70 issue.

4/23/70 issue.

4/30/70 issue...must try to scare up a secondhand copy of this.

The Churubusco Live In certainly seemed intriguing. I poked around and found a poster, and it really was a "Live In." Churubusco is a hamlet on the Quebec border, in Clinton County. It was named in honor of veterans of the Mexican War, which is how it came to have such a name.

The Kinks were added to the show, but according to "The Kinks Day By Day" the event was canceled due to lack of financial backing.
