I was gonna save these links for the intro to my next post on ads, but I may as well round them up here, in reverse order of how I found out about them.

[UPDATE, mere seconds after my inital post--the Holiday is closing too!] [UPDATE 1/27/2012: Yesterday there was a NY Times article on this as well, which also stated that Southpaw is closing. Today JVNY reports that BB's is looking for space in the East Village.]

1969 Ads Revisited: Other Venues and Miscellany, Part 1

Here they are, old yet improved 1969 Voice ads! As with the 1967 revisions, I'm doing this mainly to get the ads in a larger size, but I'm also stumbling upon a few things I missed during my first run-through.

If your hunger for more '60s counterculture NYC newsprint is insatiable, you're in luck. Over the next few weeks, The Local East Village Blog (a collaboration between the NY Times and the NYU Journalism School--yes, I'll hold my tongue on NYU overexpansion snark for the time being) will be running a series of articles on the history of the East Village Other. They're supposed to be "special weekend editions," but as I type very early on this Saturday morn the first one hasn't been uploaded quite yet. [ETA: It's now mid-afternoon and the first articles are up.] The online presentations are leading up to an exhibition entitled “Blowing Minds: The East Village Other, the Rise of Underground Comix and the Alternative Press, 1965-72." The show will kick off with a panel discussion and party on February 28. (Fear not if you can't make it to the opening, for apparently the panel will be livecast on the Local's site.) The companion website eastvillageother.org will soon include "archival material, ephemera, photographs, and EVO issues." Huzzah and thanks to Stephen F. on the Fillmore East Archives Facebook group for alerting me.

I remember the owners came around Kings Highway and asked us what we thought and what we would like. We told them something like the Electric Circus. A place with music but if you wanted to talk to the opposite sex, some loungey type areas.

Some good stuff has been coming through the pipeline lately...only I'm usually not the one that's been finding it all.

Handsome Dick Manitoba on Jimmy Fallon, 1/10/2012. HDM started a tumblr not too long ago as well. (ISTR a late-'90s Dictators show, either at CB's or Coney Island High, where he went on an anti-computer rant and swore he'd never buy one.)

I can't say I'm a fan of the "comedy stylings" of Opie and Anthony or Colin Quinn, but I did dig their discussion about '80s Long Island clubs on YT (starts around the 24 minute mark through to 45). Thanks Tommy! Naturally, there are at least two FB groups on this topic and era.

Stupefaction and Flaming Pablum both recently featured an episode of a wacky '80s public access cable dance show called New York Dance Stand, which was shot at Danceteria and Trash and Vaudeville. There's even a bit of garage action within--keep your eyes peeled for a glimpse of Wendy Wild and Dino Sorbello of the Mad Violets during the dance contest segment, starting at 17:50. I was a mere tyke and more into mainstream rock and roll at this point, but I used to relish reading about places like this in the gossip columns of the Post and Daily News. So many of these songs permeated the very air of Louis Armstrong Middle School back then--and jeez, who knew the singers of "A-E-I-O-U, I sometimes cry" were British and male??? A shorter portion of the show as broadcast on Night Flight, including some commercials ("brought to you by Sergio Valente"), is also on YT. Danceteria has a couple of FB groups devoted to it, as does Trash and Vaudeville. And Nile Rodgers discusses Danceteria in his fantastic memoir (and essential addition to your NYC rock and roll reading list) Le Freak...but he preferred Area at the time.

Not long after I watched this, Bryan of This Ain't the Summer of Love posted a link on FB to Robert Carrithers' most recent blog entry, featuring newly unearthed phots he'd taken at Danceteria and Club 57--including a couple of shots of the aforementioned Wendy Wild.

Speaking of FB, if you're not on the NY Rocks, Fillmore East, or Steve Paul's the Scene groups, you oughta be. I'm particularly digging the reminiscences on Nobody's that the Scene group has been abuzz with lately. There's a group for the '80s Peppermint Lounge too--seems I've been on it for a while, though I have no recollections of ever joining it. I'm sure if I looked up every NYC club/venue of note on FB I'd eventually find a page for each one...I wonder how the action for such things is on Google+.

Ain't talkin' 'bout love

I apologize, but I did kinda like them way back when. Excerpt from "Outside in Cold, Warm Memories," NY Times, 1/2/2012:

But Mr. Roth did expound on his ulterior motive for wanting to rock out at Cafe Wha?, a club where many famous rockers and folk musicians played in the 1960s and ’70s. His uncle, Manny Roth, who is 92, opened the club in 1960, and laid the marble floor himself.

After the band had delivered a tight and joyous rendition of “Hot for Teacher,” David Lee Roth recounted how he had been brought to the club when he was only 7 and saw his uncle appeal to the audience to help a young folk singer named Bobby Zimmerman find a place to stay. Manny Roth beamed at his nephew from a booth across from the stage.

“It took us 50 years to get this gig,” Mr. Roth said. “This is a temple. This is a very special place and I am more nervous about this gig than I would ever be at the Garden. There is no hiding up here. There are no fake vocals. There is no fake anything.”

Super-cool Ed Sanders interview at the NY Times East Village blog. I hope Fug You arrives at T.O. bookstores in a more timely manner than Love Goes to Buildings on Fire did.

But yes, I did manage to score a copy of Love Goes over the weekend, and have devoured 2/5ths of it already...pretty good progress, considering that each of the book's five chapters corresponds to a year in the author's coverage period of '73-'77. Since I've spent much of the past year studying this time frame in depth, certain aspects of the narrative feel a bit like deja vu all over again. Will Hermes' scope reaches far beyond that of this blog though--he devotes as much attention to the music scenes I'm less well-versed in, and I appreciate the edification. Still, I feel that the rock and roll portions of the book suffer a bit from a lack of the intense deep examination I crave, as it seems like only the best-known stories on the major figures in NYC proto-punk and punk are told. Great stuff of course, but by now that's well-trodden territory for all rock book aficionados worth their salt--it's the more obscure folks who need to be documented at this point. I generally agree with Times reviewer David Gates' assesment that "he writes more evocatively about jazz, salsa and concert music than about rock 'n' roll" (add the early hip-hop scene to that list too). But where Gates dismisses Hermes' interwoven personal tales of burgeoning Queens teen music fandom as unnecessary, those have naturally been my fave aspects of the book so far. I'm always a sucker for a protagonist I can identify with--and not only was Hermes a bit too young to experience the best stuff firsthand, he grew up right near my high school in Fresh Meadows. No matter how this tome will turn out, he's already won me over on that basis alone.

Can't wait for my library reservation on James Wolcott's memoirs to come through, which seems like it'd be the perfect companion volume. But it's not as if I've been lacking for NYC rock lit lately--I also recently finished The Last Sultan (on Ahmet Ertegun) and Ten Thousand Saints (a novel largely set among the '80s East Village straightedge hardcore scene), and enjoyed them both. Next up will probably be Jerry Blavat's memoirs--yet believe me, these might seem like a ton of books, but none of my efforts will ever lessen the sheer height of my Sisyphean "to read" pile.

1967 Ads Revisited: The Group Image at the Palm Gardens

First, I'll recycle a few quotes from my June 2010 post on the Group Image.

From rateyourmusic.com :

The band played for two years in various locations in Manhattan, NYC, including its own productions/shows at the Palm Gardens, and the Cheetah Club, shows with the Grateful Dead in Central Park and the Fillmore East, and other outdoor shows in parks such as Tompkins Square Park in the East Village. It was part of a larger group of artists by the same name, who participated with light shows and various other activities. Various other artists such as Tiny Tim and Wavy Gravy participated in the shows from time to time, as did the Diggers and other "alternative live style folks." After it disbanded, Leon Luther Rix went on to play with many artists including Bette Midler, Bob Dylan, and the show Rent. Doug Metzler went on to play with Country Joe and The Fish. Sadly, Paul, who played double-necked rhythm guitar, and occassionally other instruments as well as back-up vocals, died in an accident in 1967, not long after the band broke up.

Abbie Hoffman briefly discusses a Tompkins Square protest-happening they played at in this 1988 New York magazine article, but whoever transcribed the interview misheard Abbie and thought he said "the group Image," with no capital G--as in, just Image.

Work Trip. The new-found trip of work and responsibility reflected in the Morning Star experiment is perhaps the most hopeful development in the hippie philosophy to date. Other hippie tribes are becoming aware of the work trip as well. New York's Group Image, an aggressive agglomerate of some 50 East Village hippies—many of them from the Middle West—turns out everything from silk-screen prints to psychedelic artifacts and a deadly serious, tidily edited magazine called Innerspace. The tribe's seven-man combo plays to packed and palpitating houses at such uptown discotheques as Cheetah and Trude Heller's Trik. Other New York tribes, like Pablo and the Third World, produce light shows for discos and department stores, run their own shops, where they make jewelry and pottery with a medieval dedication to craft and quality. A couple of weeks ago, reader IM left a comment on that earlier post which sheds some light on the Palm Gardens: "I found a 1939 photo of part of the Palm Gardens at http://tinyurl.com/62jsauw (the first of the two photos). The sign out front says "Palm Garden To Rent for Balls Receptions Entertainments Conventions etc. Large Stage" and more that's too small to read. According to Certificates of Occupancy going back to 1922 the second floor was a balcony. I'm guessing in 1967 it was the same building considering it had been a dance hall for so many years. Whatever was there in 2004 was torn down and replaced by a 42-story luxury condo tower. sigh..."

6/8/67 issue: "The Youthquake and the Shook-Up Park"--confrontations between hippies and police in Tompkins Square. The Group Image and the Grateful Dead are mentioned.

9/7/67 issue: "Scenes" mentions an upstate pot bust involving some Diggers and Group Image members.

9/21/67 issue: "Scenes" mentions that the Group Image designed the sign for the Digger Free Store.

10/19/67 issue: "Love: A Groovy Idea While He Lasted." In the wake of the East Village's most notorious hippie double murder, the dark side of life in the area is examined. "Like generations of Lower East Siders before them, the Group Image wants to move to the country."
